At the heart of Phi Beta Kappa’s mission lies its motto, “Love of learning is the guide of life.” Through the Love of Learning Professional Development Grants program, the Society encourages members to continue their pursuit of knowledge long after graduation and provides resources for them to do so. The Society awards grants of up to $350 to ΦBK members to help cover costs such as exam fees, professional development, or continuing education.
In July 2025, 29 members, representing ΦBK alumni from 1961 to 2025, received Love of Learning Grants from a pool of 979 applicants. Recipients represented a wide range of career stages and disciplines, from the arts and sciences to education and software engineering. The funds were used for graduate school application fees; fees for exams, courses, training, and certifications; annual membership dues for professional associations; and conference, seminar, or workshop registration—reflecting the breadth of ΦBK members’ diverse ambitions and experiences.
For example, one recent graduate used their award to join the American Medical Women’s Association, gaining access to mentorship that will guide them through medical school. A chemistry professor applied their grant to attend a lab waste management course, bringing new expertise back to their classroom and students. Another recipient used their funding to earn an additional teaching certification in early childhood education, expanding their ability to create a more equitable classroom for Deaf students. These stories highlight the far-reaching impact of the Love of Learning Grants, as recipients apply the knowledge they gained to make meaningful contributions in their fields and communities. Each grant represents a tangible investment in the lifelong curiosity and dedication of Phi Beta Kappa members everywhere.
